This whole “Bakr Situation”

what-a-whirlwind:

Let us review: A principle has been “on leave” and there is no info on whether he is coming back or not. There has been a big revolt against it since he’s so popular and well liked. I want him back too, but not like this.

People have sent in emails to the school committee, the superintendent, and have even signed petitions. That’s all fine and a great show of student initiative, but there was a big sit-in today that should have been the finale.

When our own principle spoke to us saying that even she didn’t know the situation, that should have been some sort of signal. You see, when someone is “on leave” the reasons behind it are only known by the real bigshots like the superintendent. While this isn’t what we’re really asking for, it’s been taken that way by a lot of people.

Why he was let go is not the issue. It’s a private matter and based on what it is, it could be very private. We just want to know if it’s permanent or not. If not, cool, we’d like like to have a ETA on him, and if not, well…that’s too bad, but it’s out of our hands.

As if this wasn’t weird enough, there’s been news of having another sit-in tomorrow. I think that’s a boneheaded move. Part of getting results is being patient and waiting for anything to break. I think when you take a look at our school, there are many kids with great intentions, but some don’t have a clue. They think they’re part of a “movement” but they’re just trying to be cool. Others care, but don’t have the brainpower to be sensible about it. What’s worse than this “sit-in” deal they have going is the fact (or rumor) that the media has actually been contacted. This situation doesn’t call for anything like that. Like I said, this is a private matter for Mr.Bakr. I’m sure he’d be thrilled to know how much we all care about him, but getting him media attention? That could be a terrible embarrassment, especially if it’s spread that the reasoning behind his absence is something unflattering.  If anything gets out of hand it could be embarrassing to the whole school and whoever organized this whole “Bring Bakr Back” movement. The school in general already has a poor reputation, and this will just send it over the edge.

The blind shouldn’t be leading the blind, especially at such a fast rate. If what’s been planned goes down, I’ll be no part of it. You can find me in my classroom, doing whatever.
